Interprofessional Education
Interprofessional Education (IPE) is a collaborative approach to health care training that brings students from various health professions together to learn with, from, and about one another. At the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), IPE is more than a teaching model—it is a philosophy that underscores our commitment to patient-centered care, teamwork, and lifelong learning. We believe that collaboration across disciplines builds a stronger, more responsive health care workforce equipped to meet the needs of patients, families, and communities.
IPE at UMMC is woven into the fabric of our institutional mission, ensuring students from all health-related disciplines gain first-hand experience in team-based care. Through shared learning experiences, case-based simulations, and co-curricular initiatives, students develop a comprehensive understanding of the roles, responsibilities, and contributions of other professions. These learning encounters promote mutual respect, effective communication, and the collaborative competencies necessary to address the complexities of today’s health care environment.
Our IPE initiatives are guided by four strategic priorities:
- Student Development and Engagement,
- Faculty Development and Engagement,
- IPE Marketing and Promotion Strategy, and
- IPE Assessment and Evaluation.
These strategic priorities ensure our efforts remain dynamic, data-driven, and responsive to both learner needs and health care trends. Whether participating in team-based simulations, interprofessional service projects, or scholarly activities, our learners grow not only as future clinicians and professionals, but as effective members of collaborative care teams.
Mission Statement
To equip health science professionals to function effectively as members of an interprofessional community to advance the well-being of our patients.
Vision Statement
Promote an integrated learning environment across the health science professions that unites disciplines, promotes teamwork, nurtures respect, and strengthens research to promote a healthier Mississippi.
